HOW IT WORKS

Dr. Roy Stoller Laser Cap

In this form of phototherapy, a light emitting device is placed above your head that dispenses a low wattage cold  laser light that repairs and reactivates hair cells for new growth*.

The noticeable, visible red wavelengths do not produce any uncomfortable skin sensations. Moreover, laser light therapy has less side effects than topical or pill solutions*.

Dr. Stoller often recommends this procedure as a component of a Hair Prescription Plan because it can jump start hair growth from surgical procedures*.

To ensure results, we recommend an aggressive treatment program including three 25-minute sessions per week for 4 – 6 months*.

We also offer the new LC PRO, a wireless hair growth treatment device. In addition to stabilizing hair loss in about 90% of patients, and with consistent use, has also been found to stimulate hair-regrowth in around 50%*.

About the Technology

Low level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) has been well studied and is used clinically to treat a wide range of conditions including androgenetic alopecia. Several devices have received market clearance for the treatment of androgenetic hair loss and to promote hair growth in men with Hamilton-Norwood IIa-V and women with Ludwig-Savin I-II classifications of hair loss, and possessing Fitzpatrick I-IV skin types.

A widely accepted theory is that LLLT, particularly at wavelengths in the red (visible) range, affects the functioning of the stem cells that cause hair growth. LLLT activates cytochrome c oxidase and increases mitochondrial electron transport, which leads to an increase in ATP and subsequent reversal of hair follicles from the dormant telogen stage of growth, to the active growth or anagen stage.

IS IT WORTH GETTING A LASER FOR MY HAIR LOSS?

Laser light therapy is among many of the options available for treatment of your hair thinning and hair loss, whether you’ve had surgery or not, whether you are a man or a woman. It can be added to other non-surgical treatments you may be using as well, like medications or supplements.

The use of laser therapy for hair growth was accidently discovered by a Hungarian physician in 1966. He was performing experiments on rats for skin cancer treatments with laser therapy, and happened to notice that the rats had accelerated hair growth.

The type of laser used for hair treatment is called Low-level Laser Light Therapy, or LLLT for short. It is a “cold” laser, in contrast to other lasers used in medicine and surgery that you may be familiar with, that heat the target tissue and are used for cutting or remodeling the tissue. The wavelength of the laser determines its use. LLLT is of course, of a low wavelength (red at 630-670) and low wattage (power). It has been shown, both in a clinical setting with patients, as well as scientifically in the lab, that lasers do three things to aid both in a healthy scalp and healthy hair follicles.

The fundamental particles of light, called photons, are absorbed by weakened cells in the hair follicle, which stimulates their metabolism. This re-energization of the follicle causes the miniaturization process to reverse. So that instead of the follicle weakening with every cycle until it dies, it reinvigorates the cells so they can recover their health and functioning.

Secondly, they increase the production of protein, which regenerates tissue, and thirdly, blood circulation is increased. So you may be a good candidate for laser therapy for your thinning hair or hair loss whether you are a man or woman, currently using another treatment or not, or whether you have had surgery or not. It’s easy to use, not painful or uncomfortable, non-invasive, and no chemicals are involved.
