DOES ROGAINE WORK FOR A RECEDING HAIRLINE?
It is one of our most frequently ask questions – and for good reason. It would be ideal for many with receding hairlines to rub-a-dub-dub and regrow your entire hairline. That’s not going to happen – but it may help a little.
WHAT IS ROGAINE?
Topical solutions of Rogaine are prescribed to treat male pattern baldness in men and hair loss and thinning hair in women utilizing Minoxidil – a synthetic drug.
This topical solution began as an oral medication used for treating high blood pressure – until patients began to complain that one of the side effects of the medicine was hair growth in areas of the scalp that had previously been bald. Those complaints turned into a goldmine of both hair and money for Pfizer, the company that now makes Rogaine.
HOW DOES ROGAINE WORK?
The drug falls into the class of Potassium Channel Openers, which stimulate hair growth. Minoxidil is helpful in increasing the caliber of individual hair follicles as well as increasing the time that each follicle is in the actively growing (anagen) phase.
Twice daily the medication is applied topically to the scalp. We recommend an application in the morning (yes, it works with your styling products) and about 30 minutes before bedtime. You will need time for Rogaine to seep into the scalp.
However it only works as long as you use it. This it can help address short term hair loss from having a baby or general anesthesia, in which you can stop when your hair grows back to normal (minoxidil just speeds the process) or for long term inherited pattern thinning which is progressive and requires continued use of the minoxidil for patient’s lifetime or the benefits of the solution could be reversed.
HOW DOES ROGAINE WORK FOR A RECEDING HAIRLINE?
A study in the early 2000’s found that the topical solution also was effective in treating frontal hair loss, Rogaine as treatment for a receding hairline due to the fact that it has not been approved by the FDA.
Rogaine can thicken miniaturized hair regardless of where it is on the scalp or prevent hair loss and thicken a thinning hairline. It should be noted that even men who saw hair regrowth with Rogaine use did not typically see new hair around the temple area.
However, it is important to note that neither of these medications can grow hair on a totally bald scalp or lower an existing hairline. Hair follicles must exist for the medications to work.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ROGAINE?
– Skin irritation
– Contact dermatitis
– Dry & Flaky Scalp
