At our center, Dr. Stoller knows the effects of treatment with platelet plasma growth factors during male pattern baldness surgery.
There is significant improvement in hair density and stimulation of growth when follicular units were pretreated with platelet plasma growth factors before their implantation. Growth factors released from platelets may act on stem cells in the bulge area of the follicles, stimulating the development of new follicles and promoting neovascularization.
The potential for using PRP to promote healing and hair growth after hair transplantation is centered in three functional applications:
- To preserve and enhance hair follicle viability during and after hair transplantation.
- To promote and enhance tissue repair and healing after hair transplantation.
- To reinvigorate dormant hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth.
While one session of PRP therapy potentially has the ability to grow hair, it is recommended that patients are vigilante with their desire to grow hair. Many patients commit to 3-4 PRP sessions in one year and have reported that they see an increase and thickness of their hair.
